There goes the mountain,
father of fir trees, Home for the grizzlies, under its snow. Shorn of its timber, torn by the monsters. Taken by truckloads to the great plains below. Chorus:
There goes the mountain, greeter of sunrise,
Lord of the highlands, home for the eagles.

The lyrics as published in "The Authentic Guitar Style of Tom Paxton" appear to have some minor variations from the way the song is sung on his album, "New Songs From the Briarpatch". For the most part these are insignificant variations such as the presence or absence of "And" at the beginning of the second and third repetitions of the chorus. The book also shows the first line of verse two as "breeder of sunlight" yet as far as my ears can tell, he recorded "greeter of sunrise" which I rather like better anyway. Thanks to Jiri in the Czech Republic for typing the lyrics and motivating me to post them.
